Stomach Pain: Causes, Treatment & Concern

Abdominal Pain is referred as the discomfort accompanied by pain or inflammation in the abdominal. Most of the time it is not considered as of serious concern.

Stomach pain is mainly categorized under three categories:

Acute Pain: The pain that last for few hours to one day is categorized under this category, it may be accompanied by other symptoms.

Chronic Pain: The pain categorized under this, usually lasts for more than a week to months. It may be a cause of underlying disease or conditions which are needed to be addressed.

Progressive Pain: As the name suggests, the pain categorized under this category is said to be progressively increased with the time.

Causes of stomach pain

Normal causes of stomach pain are caused by ordinary stomach problems like indigestion, constipation, stomach virus and stomach infection. Usually stomach pain with such causes goes away once you get relief from above conditions.

  • Urinary tract infection
  • Irritable bowel disease
  • Gastric ulcers
  • Food poisoning/allergies
  • Stomach gas
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Abdominal muscle stress

Other serious diseases and conditions can also cause stomach pain, they include:

  • Appendicitis
  • Diverticulitis
  • Cancer in the parts of stomach area
  • Ovarian cyst
  • Gall stones
  • Pancreatitis
  • Cholecystitis
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease

Home remedies of stomach pain

1.Take shower with hot water

Applying heat to any muscle in the body is said to relax the muscle in that area. So, taking shower with warm water will relax the muscle in your whole body and you may get temporary relief from stomach pain.

2.Cloves

Clove is proven to reduce stomach gas and also posses mild anti-inflammatory activity which can help you to reduce the stomach pain.

To use cloves in stomach pain, ground some cloves to get 1-2 teaspoonful of powder and mix it with 1 tablespoon of honey at take it every night before bedtime.

3.Ginger

For years, Ginger has been used as a natural remedy for the stomach pain. Apart from stomach pain it also controls nausea and vomiting.

Gingerols and Shogaols are main two active constituents of ginger which improves contraction and speed up digestion process in the stomach.

People who suffer regularly from the stomach pain should add a piece of fresh ginger in the regular drinks.

4.Basil

Ancient herb basil is useful in many stomach conditions including stomach pain, indigestion, increase appetite and reduce stomach cramps.

Linoleic acid, an active compound of basil is considered as the strong analgesic. Which can reduce stomach pain effectively.

To use basil in stomach pain take 1-2 dried leaves or fresh leaves of basil to meals or drinks until the symptoms go away.

5.Coconut water

Coconut water is full of minerals like potassium, magnesium and other trace elements, these nutrients can help you to reduce gastric problems like stomach pain.

Apart from relief from stomach pain, it also keeps you hydrated, which also poses many health benefits.

It is recommended to drink at least one to two glasses of coconut water every six hours to get significant relief from the stomach pain.

When to seek help from doctor?

Normal stomach pain is not considered as the cause of concern, Usually, it goes away without any special treatment, but if your pain is severe and does not go away within 6-12 hours, it is advised to seek medical help in such situation.

It is a cause of concern, if any of the following conditions is seen along with stomach pain.

  • Blood in stools or vomit
  • Dehydration
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Pain while urinating
  • Diziness
