Diarrhoea: Causes, Treatments & Home Remedies


Diarrhoea is a gastric condition which is also known as Loose Stools. Usually stools are firm, moist and easy to pass. In diarrhoea, person gets frequent passing of loose, watery and sometimes unformmed faeces.

Generally diarrhoea is caused by bacterial, viral infections or food poisoning. It can last about a day to 14 days and may go away without any special treatment but in some cases doctor’s consultation become must.

Severe symptoms of diarrhoea

  • Painful sensation while passing stools
  • Blood in faeces
  • Repeated vomiting
  • High fever
  • Fatigue and Weakness
  • Frequent stools

Usually normal diarrhoea gets away without any special treatments, but immediately contact your doctor if you notice any of the above severe symptoms.

List of bacterial and virus causing diarrhoea

Viruses Causing Diarrhea – calici virus, adenovirus and rotavirus

Bacteria causing diarrhoea –  E. coliCampylobacter, V. cholerae, ShigellaSalmonella and Staphylococcus aureus

Parasites causing diarrhoea – Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium parvum and tapeworm. 

Treatment for diarrhoea

According to cause of diarrhoea, the treatment option is chosed. Your doctor will first examine you to know the exact case of diarrhea and depending on that he will design the treatment plan.

In case of bacterial infection, Antibiotics like azithromycine, metronidazole and ofloxacin are preferred.

Oral rehydration therapy to replenish the body from minerals and salts.

Other anti-diarrheal drugs like – Loperamide, Diphenoxylate, Cholestyramine, Codeine sulfate, Pepto-Bismol.

Home Remedies for diarrhoea

Eat Probiotics

Probitics are the bacteria which are essential to your gut, yogurt or kefir with live probiotic bacteria are extremely beneficial. other probiotic foods are:

Another study on antibiotic associated diarrhea suggest that use of probiotic along with antibiotic medication can significantly reduces the chances of diarrhea.

Try Ginger Tea

Ginger has been used since ancient times for multiple conditions including diarrhea. Ginger tea is the common remedy preferred in diarrhea.

Ginger is also said to relieve stomach gas, nausea and vomiting. To use ginger in diarrhea, take a fresh piece of ginger and put it into the boiling tea. Sip this ginger tea two times a day to get relief from diarrhoea
