Mechanism of Action

When your body encounters an allergen (such as pollen, pet dander, or dust mites), immune cells release histamine, a chemical messenger that binds to peripheral receptors in skin, blood vessels, and respiratory mucous membranes. Histamine binding triggers classic allergy responses: itching, swelling, watery eyes, sneezing, and excess mucus production.

How Loratadine Works:

  • Competitive Receptor Antagonism: Loratadine selectively binds to peripheral histamine receptors, competing with and blocking histamine from activating these receptor sites.
  • Minimal CNS Penetration: Unlike first-generation antihistamines (such as diphenhydramine/Benadryl), Loratadine does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier. Because it remains predominantly in the peripheral circulation, it causes significantly less sedation and cognitive impairment.

  • Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever): Temporary relief of sneezing, runny nose, itchy/watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.
  • Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria: Relief of symptoms associated with chronic hives, skin rashes, and itching.

Standard Adult & Pediatric Dosage

  • Adults & Children (6 years and older): 10 mg (one tablet) taken orally once daily.
  • Maximum Daily Dose: Do not exceed 10 mg in a 24-hour period.
  • Children under 6 years: Standard 10 mg tablets are generally not recommended; consult a pediatrician for appropriate liquid or chewable formulations.

Dosage Adjustments
